7 Alternative/Random Things To Do In Nottingham

Tired of that inevitable Weekend morning headache? Wish you could just do something for once that didn't compromise your enjoyment of the next 24 hours? We decided to do a quick survey around the office to come up with some of the best suggestions for random/alternative things to do in Nottingham - an alternative to what you ask? Well for the most part just getting absolutely sloshed but also things that are a little different to what you might usually get up to in your spare time.

Everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a great time and it's an exciting feeling to discover a new experience with your best friends, family or even a date from Tinder! Whether you want to plan a series of activities for a stag do/hen night, birthday party or just plan the ultimate date night, you will find it hard to disappoint if you include a few of our top picks for Alternative things to do in Nottingham below (spoiler alert: we are smug enough to include ourselves in the mix).

1. iLocked

Well of course we're going to toot our own horn and we're even arrogant enough to put ourselves number one on the list but we challenge you to play one of our games and then disagree. If you're looking for an unforgettable experience that can be shared with anyone on all manner of special occasions then our hi-tech escape rooms provide that something different you're looking for.

If you haven't heard of escape the room games before the premise is simple; you're locked in a highly immersive room for 60 minutes racing against the clock to solve exciting puzzles to advance through the stages of the room before finally (hopefully) doing what is required to escape.

Do you need to book in advance?

Yes our rooms are very popular especially around the weekend so it is absolutely required that you book online or phone in to reserve the time slot along with the room that interests you.

How long does a visit last?

We ask you to arrive 15 minutes early, the game lasts up to 60 minutes and then on average 10 minutes debriefing afterwards.

2. City of Caves

This vast network of underground caves is located in Nottingham city center and it's a beautiful little adventure to embark on. Venturing into the depths of it's sandstone walls you can expect your tour guide to really act the part as they regale you with some of the fascinating history that belong to these caves.

Do you need to book in advance?

Off-peak hours/days you're most likely fine to just turn up but during peak hours, weekends or holidays you're safer booking in advance as spaces on the tours can get filled up pretty quickly.

How long does a visit last?

Usually around 45 minutes and you might wish to hang out in the gift shop afterwards.

Do they offer tours for non-English speakers?

All tours are led in English however multiple language guide books are available at a very reasonable price.

3. The Dice Cup

Not surprisingly a lot of our escape room customers are also avid board game fans and that's because the two have quite a few elements in common. The satisfaction of sinking your mental teeth into an epic board game with friends scratches a similar itch to facing the puzzles found in one of our rooms. In fact there are actually board games that have been created to try and mimic the escape room experience, whilst their not nearly as entertaining as the real thing they do serve as a fine substitute if you've run out of rooms to play in the area (don't worry we will keep on building and releasing new rooms!!).

With hundreds of games on offer you're bound to find something you like for any size group. They're a vegan based cafe and have a selection of food and drink to keep you brain fuelled.

Do you need to book in advance?

4. Kitty Cafe

Do you like cats? Great - done deal. For everyone else (granted you aren't allergic) the coffee is delicious and the cakes are out of this world.

Basically this is a cafe with tons of comfortable furniture with the added bonus of the cutest cats and kittens roaming around to perk you up even on the most difficult of days. I mean let's face it humans may not be your favourite species to spend time with and that's alright because you don't have to. Grab one of the many toys littered around the place and make a new furry best friend.

What's also great is that a portion of the admission charge is put back into helping the cafe home and find owners for the collection of kitties which adds even more to the warm fuzzy feelings you'll experience on your visit.

Do you need to book in advance?

Yes booking a table in advance is highly recommended

OK so we would forgive you for rolling your eyes over what is basically a playground made up entirely of trampolines.. but honestly? It's a blast and you will find yourself regressing to a child like state within seconds. There isn't really much more to say about Planet Bounce, really even the name of the place servers as enough of a description.

6. The Lost City

As an escape room company we love immersive experiences and The Lost City is a great adventure for everyone. At it's core it's a crazy mini golf venue but the way it's structured combined with the Inca-themed rainforest does make it feel like more than just a quick round of putt putt! You will find yourself surrounded by thunder and lightning with gigantic robotic animals at arms reach, the environment is reminiscent of the rainforest cafe but you feel much more like an explorer here. Rock climbing and bouldering has certainly come a long way in recent years, the popularity of the sport has seen more and more climbing gyms popping up all over the country and Nottingham is lucky enough to be home to the notorious "The Depot" which is a favourite training spot for everyone from beginners, casual climbers to professional climbers. You can book a group training session with one of the coaches to learn the basics and it's not a problem if you don't own any of the gear because you can rent everything you need there. For the kids there is a kid friendly sized climbing wall and if you're worried about hurting yourself you should be assured that the whole place is very well matted and as long as you're paying attention to others the risk is very low!

Do you need to book in advance?

If you want to receive coaching yes, otherwise you can just turn up and get climbing if you have some previous experience or you will be required to take some time with one of the members of staff to learn the rules and safety procedures - ideally bring someone with you who has climbed before.
